Let Them Be Wild.
Letting children be children is essential for healthy early development and well-being - but what is being a child truly mean?
Childhood is a unique phase of life characterized by exploration, imagination, play, and natural curiosity and WILD. When children are allowed the time and space to engage freely in play and discovery, they develop critical social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills. When restrict this - whatever the reason - we hinder their natural and innate curiosity for all that is around them.
Structured schedules and adult-driven activities can often limit these opportunities, reducing children’s ability to foster creativity and independence.
WHAT IT MEANS TO LET GO….
Child-led and nature-immersive experiences connect them to nature and nurture a deeper sense of place and belonging, nurture their wild. Preserving old ways of learning through play and kinship with the natural world helps children build resilience and respect for their environment.
THE CHALLENGE…
The next time you find yourself leading them, correcting their process whether in art or play, interrupting their thoughts or expressing themselves - take a deep breath and let them be children. Ask questions rather than give instruction, let them explore, create and learn.
THE WHY….
Letting go isn’t easy and as a teacher I see it both in myself and caretakers daily. However when we find in it us to let go fully and allow little ones to experience childhood fully we help to ensure they grow into well-rounded, confident individuals with a strong foundation for lifelong learning and connection.
I hope your Summer is going well and WILD. Keep playing.
Warmly,
Shana
